WHAT ABOUT CONTACT LENSES?

The advantages are all round vision and not having to wear spectacles, but they do require more care. There are two main categories:

RIGID:

(a)P.M.M.A. or hard lenses. These are infrequently fitted to new patients now due to the introduction of new better materials.

(b) Gas permeable lenses. There are many different materials available. As the name suggests air can pass through to the surface of the eye allowing it to "breathe", giving longer wearing times. They require more care and maintenance than hard lenses.

SOFT:

These also have gas permeable properties and are easier to wear. They do, however, require careful cleaning and maintenance. Soft lenses are ideal for those who only want part time lens wear or are involved in vigorous sporting activities.

With any type of contact lens personal motivation and careful attention to cleaning and maintenance are the key factors to successful wearing. It is most important to follow up with regular aftercare to ensure the eyes are healthy, even if they feel quite comfortable. As with spectacles, contact lenses are specified for your needs and will require more detailed individual discussion.
