Advanced Eye Care Technology at Harrold Opticians

At Harrold Opticians, we’re on a mission to provide exceptional eye care.

Modern eye care technology has evolved tremendously, and we want you to benefit from it. That’s why we have invested in sophisticated diagnostic equipment that enables us to examine your eyes more precisely than ever before.

Our experts will walk you through the state-of-the-art technologies behind each comprehensive eye examination at our practices.

Exploring digital retinal imaging

Digital retinal imaging is offered as part of your comprehensive eye exam. This technology captures crisp, high-resolution photos of your retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. These images provide a detailed, long-term record of your eye health.

We can then monitor subtle changes in your retina over time. Digital retinal imaging helps us spot conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, allowing us to make better diagnostic decisions and tailor treatment plans for your needs.

What do OCT Scans bring to the table?

Optical coherence tomography scan results, showing the retina and a cross section of the eye.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an extraordinary advancement in diagnostic eyecare. It uses light waves to create a 3D, cross-sectional image, which is like an architectural blueprint of your retina. Completely non-invasive, quick and painless, it gives us an unprecedented view of every layer of your retinal structures and even the tiniest changes in them.

This means that OCT scans can help us identify potential problems up to five years earlier than traditional retinal imaging methods. Early detection and diagnosis mean we can monitor eye conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy more effectively, keep a record of your scan results at each appointment to compare them, and recommend treatments if required to manage them. This will help significantly to protect your vision and eye health in the long term.

We encourage you to add the OCT as part of your eye exam for your peace of mind.

Addressing reading difficulties caused by Visual Stress

Visual Stress, also known as Meares-Irlen syndrome, can affect how you process visual information and may lead to reading difficulties in adults and children, affecting their fluency and reading speed.

It may lead to headaches, sore eyes, blurry or moving print on a page, and letters changing size when reading. Many people with Visual Stress find that their eyes tire quickly, they have to use a finger to track their place on a page, and they may skip words or lines. They may also have issues concentrating on the text, leading to frustration and low self-esteem around their reading abilities.

Select Harrold Opticians branches offer screenings for visual comfort and reading difficulties, and at our St Ives branch, we offer a comprehensive Visual Stress test. This involves examining how your eyes move and focus in greater detail, identifying symptoms and pattern glare, and whether adding a coloured overlay helps ease symptoms.

If we find this does help, we will prescribe the preferred overlay for you to use at home. We will also recommend returning for a colorimetry assessment using our state-of-the-art intuitive colorimeter, which allows us to find the most precise tint that we can use in glasses lenses to significantly alleviate your symptoms, making reading more comfortable and speedier.
