Are your eyes getting enough sleep?

Harrold Opticians • July 31, 2019

As many of you may agree, getting into bed after a long day in work can be extremely satisfying. But with the unpredictability of modern-day life, we understand it’s difficult to measure your sleep pattern in comparison to expert recommendations.

Having a good night’s sleep allows your eyes to frequently replenish and rejuvenate which result in you feeling more energetic during the day. If you don’t allow your eyes to rest adequately, it may result in problems such as dry eyes, eye strain.

Which leaves you with the question, are your eyes as healthy as you think ?

If you are a member of the restless night club and need some help, here are some simple top tips that may improve the quality of your sleep tonight:

1. Ditch the blue light

Research has shown that there is a correlation between the lack of sleep and the use of regularly used electronic products, i.e. mobile phones. Why not try reading a book? Or attempt some impromptu yoga to help you wind down before you go to bed?

2. Keep your bedroom as dark as possible

Sleeping in the dark contributes to the natural production of a hormone called Melatonin, which is proven to help you get a good night’s sleep. So, it may help to invest in a handy eye mask.

3. Decrease the temperature of the room

It has been proven that people who sleep in a cooler room are more likely to get a more restful sleep than those who keep their room hot. Opening your window or converting to cotton bed sheets will reduce both your temperature and restlessness, ensuring that you’re bright-eyed for the following morning.

4. Reduce the number of pillows you use

Ensuring you have the correct number of pillows is essential for a good night’s sleep, as it creates a support structure and aligns your body throughout the night. Many researchers have stated that having one singular comfy pillow can actually assist you more than sleeping with two or three.

5. Stay away from the snooze

Maintaining a quality sleeping regime will increase the overall depth of your sleep. Be consistent. Oversleeping in the morning may result in you becoming restless in the evening, which can make you tired and create an unhealthy pattern. Set your alarm in the morning and soon enough your body will follow suit.
