How to Relax Your Eyes

December 2, 2021

Throughout an average day, your eyes have a great deal of work to do and if you are looking at screens a lot of the time, either for work or using your phone, for example, your eyes are probably not getting the rest they need to stay healthy.

If you have been getting headaches, or feel like your eyes are tired and strained, you should try some techniques that will help to relax your eyes:

Remember to blink

If you are spending a lot of time looking at screens without looking away, your eyes can get dry because you are not blinking often enough. So, you need to remember to blink regularly which will lubricate your eyes and reduce dryness which causes a strain.

Use the 20-20-20 rule

Eye health experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule for people when they are using devices and looking at screens. It means that you take your focus away from your screen every 20 minutes, for at least 20 seconds, to look at something at least 20 feet away. This easy and quick exercise helps to prevent digital eye strain.

Do a figure of 8

Pretend that there is a number 8 in front of you on its side and trace the 8 with your eyes, so that your eyes are rolling around the shape for a few minutes. Do it both anticlockwise and clockwise and it will help to refresh your eyes and keep your vision clear. Rolling your eyes in any direction will help give your eyes some relief, so get into the practice of doing these eye exercises.

Apply a warm compress

Give your eyes a little bit of pampering by getting a warm face cloth or something similar and place it over your eyelids for a couple of minutes. This will make your eyes more relaxed, especially if they have been staring at a screen all day.

Wash with cold water

Another way to freshen your eyes up is to use a cold cloth on your eyelids, as this helps to improve blood circulation. If you are at work and do not have a cloth handy, even just cupping water in your hands to splash your face and eyelids will help.

Use aloe vera

Aloe vera has a lot of good uses and one of them is to use it around your eyes to reduce puffiness. You need to be careful not to apply it too close to your eye though, as it will sting.

If your eyes are feeling strained or you are worried about the effects of spending a lot of time looking at screens, it is a good time to book in for an eye test.
