We’re here to help you navigate the latest in myopia management, offering expert advice and proven solutions to support long-term eye health – for you and your family.
What is myopia?
Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is when distant objects appear blurred, while close-up details remain clear. It develops when the eye grows too long or the front surface curves too much, causing light to focus in front of the retina – the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye – rather than directly on it.
Those with myopia usually need glasses or contact lenses for long-distance focusing, whether looking at a school board, watching TV or playing sports.
What causes myopia?
Myopia is becoming more common around the world. By 2050, nearly half the global population may be affected, with around 1 in 10 expected to develop high myopia, a more serious form linked to greater eye health risks.
Several factors can increase the risk:
Family history
Children are more likely to be short-sighted if one or both parents are.
Close-up activities
Long periods spent reading, doing homework or using screens can play a part.
Not enough time outdoors
Research shows that less time outdoors can increase the risk of myopia. Encouraging just 2 hours of outdoor play a day can encourage healthy visual development.
We also know that myopia often progresses more rapidly in children under 10. That’s why regular eye checks and early support can make a real difference in managing their vision over time.
Why myopia management matters
Managing myopia is key to protecting lifelong eye health. While glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, higher levels of myopia increase the likelihood of serious eye conditions in adulthood, including retinal detachment, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
