Top Tips for Travelling with Contact Lenses

Harrold Opticians • April 12, 2019

We understand that it is most people’s dream to travel to new and exotic places. Although contact lenses come with a vast array of benefits for doing this, it is important to remember to take good care of them whilst doing so – ensuring a good quality of safety and hygiene.

We have compiled a handy guide on how you can make sure that your contact lenses are kept clean and hygienic during your travels:

1. Maintain Quality Eye Hygiene

Like with everything, ensuring that your eyes are clean and healthy is vital whether you are travelling or not. It is important to have quality eye cleanliness to eliminate the risk of catching infections in your eyes – causing symptoms such as eye pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity and many more. Make sure that you change your lenses as instructed by your optometrist and avoid any bacteria entering your eyes. If you start to suffer from any of the symptoms above, convert back to your glasses and visit your optician as soon as possible.

2. Take an Adequate Supply

When purchasing contact lenses, it is important that they are all purchased and prescribed from your optometrist. You won’t have the luxury of being able to buy more contact lenses whilst you are travelling, so make sure that you stock up with enough to last you for your whole trip – making sure you have extras and spares too! Don’t purchase contact lenses from places which you are unsure about.

3. Don’t Forget Your Contact Solution

Ensuring that you remember the correct amount of solution for your contact lenses is also vital for your eye hygiene throughout your trip. There are a lot of contact lens solutions out there which work well with certain lenses – make sure that you use the solution recommended by your opticians as it is important that you use the one that works best for your contacts.

4. Remember to Give Your Eyes a Break

Remember to always take your contact lenses out in the evening to ensure that a break is given to your eyes. This will stop you from developing dry eyes. If you are having a holiday rest day, or you're just chilling by the pool, it may be useful for you to have some time away from your contact lenses – giving time for the natural moistures to return to your eye.
